D.M. Gates, Senior Pastor – A native of Wichita, Pastor Gates knew at the age of 12 that God had placed a call on his life for the ministry. He has a passion for speaking truth to people in a way they can understand and apply to their everyday lives.
Pastor Gates began his ministry by leading a weekly bible study group. When the group quickly outgrew its modest accommodations, he founded Mending Place Ministries, which held its first Sunday service on August 2nd, 2009. Pastor Gates continues to engage his congregation with spiritually rejuvenating and energetic teachings based in the Word of God. Today, Mending Place Ministries is growing not only in members, but as a strong spiritual presence in Wichita.
Pastor Gates is a graduate of Wichita State University with a BA in business with an emphasis in marketing. Currently, he is employed with the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office (2001) as a full-time Sheriff’s Deputy. He has been married to his wife, Heather, since 1997 and they have three children, sons Isaiah and Elijah and daughter Malone.
Director of Organizational Strategy
Heather Gates has been happily married to Dioane Gates since 1997, they have three children, two boys and one girl.
Heather was saved in 1995 in a small store front church. She began serving in ministry shortly after. Heather is passionate about developing leaders and helping anyone God brings into her life to become the best version of themselves.
Currently, Heather serves Mending Place at South City as the Children's Pastor, Director of Organizational Strategy, and leads Women of Standard.
In 2005, Darnell Bryant made a life-altering decision to accept Christ as his personal Lord and Savior. In 2008 he came to Mending Place where he has an unmistakable call in ministry to the students and parents of our church. Darnell has a heart for studying God’s Word and communicating it in a way that today’s generation can clearly understand. His desire is for every student to form a committed and unconditional relationship with Jesus Christ.
In 1999, Darnell graduated from Monterey Peninsula College with his Associate’s Degree. Darnell enjoys spending time with his beautiful wife and hanging out with friends.
Worship and Music Arts Director
Abigail Bryant has a calling to see other people have a passionate, devoted relationship with Jesus Christ. It is very apparent that her love for authentic worship drives her and is at the heart of who she is.
Abby earned a degree in guitar performance at Wichita State University in spring of 2010. She enjoys spending time with her husband, Darnell, and hanging out with close friends.
Director of Community Engagement
Robert Walterscheid currently servers as the Director of Community Engagement. His strong interpersonal skills along with the ability to develop and maintain relationships truly help him succeed in this position.
Robert also serves in our Student Ministry as a teacher in the middle school class, Step Up.
Robert, his wife, and two boys gladly call Mending Place at South City home and all of the members family.
Terri is the Church Administrator at Mending Place at South City. She first attended Mending Place with her husband, Dave, who was serving as a guest drummer for our Worship and Music Arts team. They believed so strongly in the mission to lead people to a life of victory in Jesus Christ that they joined the church in the fall of 2015 to serve in ministry.
Terri believes that people are not an interruption and looks for opportunities to share love with others through encouragement and serving. One of her favorite scriptures is “Oh, how grateful and thankful I am to the Lord because He is so good.” –Psalm 7:17 TLB
Terri and Dave have been married for almost 40 years; have two adult children, three grandchildren and a crazy cat named Tesla. When Terri isn’t working, she enjoys spending time cooking and Bible journaling.
Mary Burkhalter has served at Mending Place since 2009, helping our members and guest feel welcomed through the enthusiastic group of volunteers she leads.
Sister B, (as so many lovingly refer to her) is a valued treasure at Mending Place at South City. She is a trusted mentor, an example of a strong, Godly woman and a voice of wisdom and accountability to so many.
Mary loves spending time with her family. She has four grown children, three daughters and one son, and seven grandchildren.
Director of Digital Media
Delilah Walterscheid and her husband Robert, joined Mending Place at South City in 2012, after being invited to an Easter service.
Delilah quickly felt at home at Mending Place, making new friends, participating in activities and growing as a believer. She soon found ways to use her gifts of creativity and technology to further the mission of the church.
Delilah has been married to Robert since 2012. They have two boys, Eric and Ryan.
Associate Pastor and Church Planting Intern
Pastor Jamaal D. Watson, a native of Goose Creek (near North Charleston), South Carolina was saved by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ at an early age and called into the ministry at the age of 17. He received his ministerial license in 2005 and was ordained in 2008. In 2009 Jamaal earned his bachelors degree in Christian Education from Morris College in Sumter, South Carolina and graduated in 2015 with his masters degree from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in South Hamilton, Massachusetts.
Sensing the strong call of God to plant and pastor a local church in Wichita, Kansas; Jamaal moved to Wichita in September of 2015 and is currently an Associate Pastor & Church Planting Intern at Mending Place at South City Church. He looks forward to launching and pastoring the church plant Christ has sent him to Wichita for in the near future. Jamaal's passion is ministering to people through the preaching and teaching of the Word of God. His mission in life: To please God.
